Tympanometry - testing the functionality of the middle ear
Being performed routinely in clinical set up’s since early the 1970’s, Tympanometry is a reliable process of testing the condition of the middle ear and the mobility of the ear drum. The examination involves a process of creating variations in the pressure of the ear canal, whilst measuring the quantum of reflected sound from the ear drum, to gauge its mobility and other factors relevant to hearing loss diagnosis.
Professional Tympanometry tests for optimum benefits
With vast industry experience and an expert team, Ace Audiology has been able to provide valuable diagnostic data using Tympanometry and Acoustic Reflexes as part of its test battery to the residents of Melbourne. The procedure of assessment begins with an otoscopic examination to ensure there is no hindrance caused by earwax or foreign objects. A probe is then pressed against the entrance of the ear canal to form a pressure seal enabling a pump to vary the incident pressure. The subsequent reflected sound, plotted against changes in canal air pressure form the graph called the tympanogram. The test usually takes about 30 seconds per ear and is often applied to children who may suffer glue ear.
The normal result will thus display a tympanogram that will show atmospheric middle ear pressure and normal range compliance. Alternatively an abnormal result will reveal:
- Fluid in the middle ear
- Perforation or scarring of tympanic membrane
- The existence of negative middle ear pressure
- Reduced middle ear compliance
- Earwax causing blockage
Versatile provider of art hearing aid technology
The tympanogram contributes to the overall picture of an individual’s hearing impairment. Middle ear problems can often be treated medically or surgically and their discovering can guide relevant treatment and referral processes.
